Ashok Gehlot: News
Ashok Gehlot is a senior Indian National Congress (INC) leader and the Chief Minister of Rajasthan as of 2021. Gehlot did his BSc, MA, and LLB from Jodhpur University, Rajasthan. Engaged in politics and social work since younger days, Gehlot rendered his services in the refugee camps during the 1971 East Pakistan crisis. He was a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from 1980 to 1989 and from 1991 to 1999 from the Jodhpur constituency. He served as the Deputy Sports Minister in 1984 and as Minister of State (MoS) in the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation during 1984-85. He also served in the PV Narasimha Rao government as MoS for Textiles from 1991 to 1993. Gehlot served as the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (RPCC) head during 1985-89 and 1994-99, leading Congress to victory in the 1998 Rajasthan State Assembly elections and became Chief Minister for the first time. The next two decades saw political power in the state constantly change hands. Gehlot's government couldn't retain the mandate in the 2003 Assembly polls, and BJP's Vasundhara Raje succeeded as Chief Minister. But 2008 saw a reversal, with Gehlot becoming CM for the second time. He again lost the office to Raje in 2013 but returned to power in the 2018 elections, becoming the state's CM for the third time.
